Coventry Rugby Club further commits to its local community outreach by running mental health first aid training in partnership with Charter Savings Bank.

Eight members of the team at Coventry Rugby are now certified Mental Health First Aiders after taking part in training including a learning framework to help them to listen without judgement, and signpost available support via both professional and charitable organisations. The course also covered the importance of family and friends support networks to a person’s mental health journey, as they can be hugely beneficial to someone’s road to recovery.

This training was gifted as part of a strong, ongoing partnership by online savings provider, Charter Savings Bank with the value of this training saving the club around £3,500.

As part of the sponsorship, Charter Savings Bank also help to support the community outreach team at Coventry Rugby whose work encompasses a range of support that is delivered by their full-time coaches. This includes teaching and assisting with various lessons including swimming, the running of lunchtime and after school clubs, and leading a mixture of PE and sensory lessons.

Rebecca Osborn, Senior Physiotherapist at Coventry Rugby said, “This training is vital to help the Community Outreach team to support the mental wellbeing of children, some of which could be living below the poverty line or experiencing challenging backgrounds.

The training conducted by Richard & Carly from Charter Savings Bank was in-depth and extremely insightful. It will really help us to be there as a listening ear to the children who we support and be there to signpost them to suitable organisations.”

Richard Barrett, Group Head of People Development, Charter Savings Bank said: “We are delighted to have been able to provide Coventry Rugby with training and certification for their new team of Mental Health First Aiders. The outreach work that the club provides is exceptional and really makes a difference to the local community. This training will help them to offer support for anyone experiencing difficulties with their mental health. The team were so receptive to the training and I know these will be extremely useful skills for them to have alongside the work they do.”
